Two components make up the Control4 integration and both are versioned below: the Control4 plugin (installed on Rithum Switch) and the Rithum Control4 driver (installed on the Control4 system). Check the compatibility table to make sure your versions work together.
Requirements
- A Control4 system on the same network as Rithum Switch
- Control4 minimum OS version 3.4.3 for audio zones (2.10.6 for lights/scenes/thermostat only; latest recommended)
- The Rithum Control4 driver installed on Control4 (download at the bottom of this page)
- The Control4 plugin installed on Rithum Switch
- Rithum Switch minimum firmware version 5.3.0
Compatibility
| Control4 plugin | Rithum Control4 driver | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1.3.0 | 019.0 or later | Required for audio zones, favourites and multi-room grouping |
| 1.2.0 | 015 – 019.0 | Lights, scenes, thermostat only (no audio) |
| 1.1.x | 010 or later | Lights, scenes, thermostat |
Current Capabilities
- Integrate the Rithum Stat thermostat with Control4 — a Control4 thermostat proxy for every Rithum Stat zone: primary Heating and Cooling, NEW: Secondary Heating and Secondary Cooling, and NEW: a Switched zone for schedulable on/off loads (hot water, towel rail, fan) with homeowner scheduling from the switch
- Activate Control4 scenes from the Rithum Scenes screen — including driver-owned Global Scenes shared across the project and automatically pulled Advanced Lighting scenes
- Control on/off/brightness of Control4 loads (or a zone of loads) from the Rithum Levels screen
- NEW: Control4 audio zones on the Rithum Music screen — full multi-zone media control: zone selection, transport (play/pause/skip), per-zone and group volume/mute, zone grouping, now-playing with artwork and streaming-service attribution badges (Spotify, TIDAL, TuneIn, etc.), and favourites with source selection (a "Now Playing" entry per source routes it into the zone)
Limitations
- Changes made externally from Rithum Switch can take up to 10 seconds to be reflected on the switch
- Starting audio content from Rithum is via favourites/presets only — full catalogue browsing is a Control4 Navigator feature that Control4 does not make available to third-party products
- Local music libraries (legacy My Music / DLNA) cannot be started from Rithum (Control4 platform limitation). Control4 has deprecated My Music; its replacement is expected to support favourites, at which point local content becomes startable from Rithum too. If a local-library session is already playing, Rithum provides full volume/transport/grouping control of it
- Multi-room grouping adds rooms to a live session (Control4 semantics): at least one zone in the group must be playing, and a room can only join a session its audio hardware can reach
- Sessions started by a streaming app outside Control4 (e.g. Spotify Connect) cannot be controlled by Control4 — for full Spotify control from Rithum, use the Rithum Spotify Web Connect plugin, which is compatible with Control4 systems
See the Control4 User Guide here.
Upgrading from v18 — READ BEFORE UPGRADING
⚠️ The Thermostat driver is NOT a drop-in update from v18. The v19 driver adds new thermostat proxies (Secondary Heating, Secondary Cooling, Hot Water), and updating the driver in place can leave the Control4 processor unresponsive. Delete the existing v18 Thermostat driver from the project first, then add the v19 driver. Use the Export/Import flow below to carry your settings across; contact Rithum support if you'd like assistance.
Migration flow (carries your configuration across):
- Update the existing v18 driver in place to 018.7 or later (safe — same proxies). This adds the Export Configuration action.
- Run Export Configuration and copy the whole blob from the Configuration Export property (Ctrl+A, Ctrl+C).
- Before deleting, review or screenshot any Composer programming attached to the driver's scenes/events — deleting the driver deletes its events and the programming on them, and programming cannot be exported. Then delete the v18 driver, add the v19 driver, and set the switch IP again (Connections → Network).
- Paste the blob into Configuration Import (press Set), then run Import Configuration.
- The Configuration Export box shows the import summary plus a STILL MANUAL checklist — re-bind the listed relay, room and scene button-link connections in Composer, then refresh navigators.
- The standard (non-Thermostat) driver can be updated in place from v18.
- Per-switch scenes are now capped at 5 (previously 10) — a change required for Composer stability on larger projects. Additional scenes should become Global Scenes (up to 40, shared across every switch in the project).
-
Scenes 6–10 from a v18 export are converted to Global Scenes automatically during import. Global scenes only need importing once per project: re-importing, or importing another switch's export containing the same scenes, will not create duplicates. To convert a per-switch scene (1–5) manually, edit the export blob before importing: in its
propertiessection renameSCENE_N_NAMEtoGLOBAL_SCENE_M_NAME(any free slot M), and likewise_TYPE,_STATE_1(the Off label) and_STATE_2(the On label) — the scene count corrects automatically, and an explicitly named slot overwrites that slot. Keypad bindings or programming attached to the old scenes must be re-attached to the new Global Scene. - Import safety: an invalid paste is rejected whole and nothing is applied; settings that don't apply to the new driver are skipped and reported in the import summary; scene counts are corrected automatically.
If you need help migrating a larger project, or with consolidating scenes from several switches into Global Scenes, reach out to Rithum support and we will assist.
- Rithum Switch firmware 5.3.0 and Control4 plugin 1.3.0 are required for the audio features; lights/scenes/thermostat continue to work with earlier plugin versions.
